Yarl Startup Thiruvizha showcased local innovations

The Business Linkage Cell (UBL) of the University of Jaffna, in partnership with the Gate Institute, organised the ‘Yarl Startup Thiruvizha’ on May 26, 2024. The event not only showcased local innovations but also celebrated the university’s achievements — over 18 patents and four commercialised products to date.

A preliminary round on May 24 drew dozens of business models and 25 hackathon applications, from which 10 promising teams were shortlisted. Among them, three standout ideas received top recognition: iron-rich biscuits to address nutritional needs, a natural mosquito repellent, and Wire Indigo Soap for enhanced hygiene. The program featured inspiring talks from industry leaders and mentors.

The event was chaired by Professor Sivakolundu Srisatkunarajah, Vice Chancellor of the University of Jaffna. In his speech, he highlighted the importance of education and research for entrepreneurship and innovation, and outlined the steps being taken by the Jaffna University of Technology in this regard. Professor Kandiah Pakeerathan, Director of the University Business Linkage (UBL) Cell at the University of Jaffna, and UBL Manager Mr Anu Rakavan also spoke at the event.
